Run of the Charles IX (April 26, 2009) : For our 9th go at the 24-mile Relay, we had one of our nicest days, if a tad steamy. Newcomer Jay W. pinch-hit for Wild Bill on Leg One, joined by his old college pal Gary, returning to that Leg after taking last year off. Otherwise, we returned last year's Team, knocking nine minutes off our time. We finished Third in the Corporate Class, which we've done twice before. That rates a trophy - a little wooden canoe that looks like a dastardly mustache.

Conn. River - Hanover, NH to Putney, VT : (May 23-25, 2008). Friday - Eight of us gather below the Wilder Dam in Hanover, NH and spend the cool and cloudy afternoon paddling 13 miles to the UVLT Burnham Meadow campsite, on the VT side, after a lunch stop at Burnap's Island. Agony and Ecstasy at Sumner Falls. Karl and Gary join us at B. Meadow.

Sat. 27 miles from Burnham Meadow to Lower Meadow, another excellent UVLT site, in No. Walpole, NH above Bellows Falls.

Sun. A two-mile portage (with hard and easy options) around the Bellows Falls Dam gets the hard part of the day out of the way early. The rest of our 21-mile paddle to Putney, VT, in perfect sunshine, puts this day to its highest use, I'd say.

Delaware River - Upper and Water Gap : May 26-28, 2007. Continuing a tradition of two decades, twelve of us devoted Memorial Day weekend to a river camping trip, this time on the beautiful Upper Delaware and south through the Delaware Water Gap, which is a National Park. Four of us who had commitments we couldn't evade on Friday started at the Ten Mile River put-in in Narrowsburg, NY early Sat., and were soon joined by our eight pals who started Friday morning from Callicoon, 20 miles to the north. We paddled together the 73 miles to the southern terminus of the Water Gap - the Kittatinny NPS Visitors Center, which we reached Monday afternoon.

Low water increased the number of exposed and, worse, not-quite-exposed rocks and boulders and required some walking, but the scenery was generally excellent, the River not overly crowded and the primitive campsites plentiful. Combine that with abundant wildlife - eagles most notably - crystal water fine for swimming and our usual culinary feats, and you have yet another memorable Memorial trip. That 's why we keep doing it.

Run of the Charles (April 27, 2008) : Low 50s and damp made for pretty good paddling conditions, although the low water kept the pace slow, as we River Revelers made it VIII straight Top Five (roughly) finishes in the 24-mile relay race. Our 4th place finish in Corporate was down one spot from 2007, but only because of the return of powerhouse Lantern Films, which took last year off. We were within 20 minutes of Overall perennial winner Quinobequin Canoe Club - the closest we've ever come.
