Polar Bears at Tufts in Northeaster (October 18, 2009) : At least the frozen rain didn't turn into snow until shortly after the Polar Bears' last race. That's the best that could said about the weather, except that lack of wind was never a problem. The breezes were blowing briskly from the Northeast and only intensified over the course of a very wet, very cold day. Three teams of Polar Bears, including Tom and Katharine, participated in a round-robin competition with six other teams, racking up a couple of head-to-head victories before falling just short of the medal round. I think they just wanted to come in out of the frozen rain.

Polar Bears at BC - Savin Hill YC (September 20, 2009) : Two pairs of Polar Bears were back in Boston for another regatta - this time at the Savin Hill Yacht Club, on Morrissey Boulevard in Dorchester. Tom and Katharine (A) led off, followed by Wes and Kara (B) - each time racing twice and then three times. This was not a great spot for spectators, as the races took place way offshore in Boston Harbor. It was a comfortable spot, however, with three flat-screen TVs in the bar-lounge permitting frequent glimpses of the Pats (bad) and the Sox (good). A beautiful sunny day, but mixed results for the Pale Bruins too.

Polar Bears at Tufts - September 13, 2009 : Saturday's rain yielded to sunny skies Sunday morning, as a fresh team of Polar Bears arrived at the Tufts boat-house on the east (Medford) side of Upper Mystic Lake. The wind took a while to wake up, but the breezes eventually became more than fitful and the A crew (Leah and Jimmy) and B crew (Katharine and Jeff) both got in five races. J. and K. managed two 4ths and a 5th in their five races. The Polar Bears had Boat 17 for the first pair of races, 16 for the final three. Excellent showing by the Pale Bruins!

Polar Bears at MIT III - April 19, 2009 : The sun came out for Day II of the MIT Regatta, but he hardly warmed things up. Disinformation about the start time spread by saboteurs caused part ot the Polar Bear Armada to show up a bit late. Duty called me elsewhere at noon, after a few photos. The two groups switched boats, so today Andrew and Katharine dealt with the noisy and transparent colored Mylar sails - a challenge on another windy day on the Charles.

Polar Bears at MIT II - April 18, 2009 : D.J. and Leah in the A boats, with their colorful but raucous Mylar sails. and Tex and Katharine, in their more traditional garb, defended the honor of the Polar Bears in a long and increasingly chilly day of racing on the Charles. The breaks were few and brief. More tomorrow!

Polar Bears at BU - April 5, 2009 : Can it ever be too windy for a sailing regatta? Certainly, and today approached that. The two pairs of Polar Bears - Andrew and Katharine; Emily and Jeff - had their hands full remaining dry in the twelve races I witnessed. The sun came out during the second race and in most respects it was a beautiful Spring day on the banks of the River Charles, but the chilly winds did blow! They reached a crescendo during the firth and sixth races, when many boats flipped. One such was number 5, with Katharine and Andrew, but unlike some of the others, they dusted themselves off in a flash and got right back in the race. My camera battery conked not that long after that, so I was unable to do justice to Jeff and Emily. Maybe next time. Polar Bears rule!

Polar Bear Sailors at MIT - Nov. 9, 2008 : The Bowdoin Polar Bears sent two pairs of sailors to a big race hosted today by MIT on the Charles River - Sophomores D.J. and Leah and Freshmen Ben and Katharine. For November, the weather was just about perfect - a long but entertaining day of late Autumn sunshine and brisk breezes.

Katharine went for an unscheduled swim in her first race but she and Ben hardly missed a beat, finishing in the top half for that race and their subsequesnt five. D.J. and Leah did even better in their six races, and the Polar Bears finished fourth out of 19 schools, including nautical powerhouses such as the Coast Guard Academy and Newport's Salve Regina.
